Afton Trail Run Volunteer Email 2 2014

Date: 6/19/14
Subject: Afton Trail Run Volunteer Email 2  – 2014

Hi All,

First off, thank you for volunteering for the 2014 Afton Trail Run 25KM and 50KM (Saturady July 5th), we cannot tell you how much we appreciate your involvement! It looks like we are going to have another great race with a sold out field with approx 600 runners in total!

With just over two weeks until race day I wanted to give you a quick update on where we are at with volunteer planning for this years event. Early next week we will start making volunteer assignments and hope to have things pretty well in place by mid-week – as always there will be a few tweaks here and there right up to race day.

The reason for this email is that we want to encourage those of you who are already signed up to help us get the word out with any other volunteers that you know of who are wanting / planning to help out but have not yet signed up! Facebook is a great way to reach out or via an email or phone call etc. Please encourage anyone that wanted to help at your aid station / volunteer position to go HERE and sign up. https://www.aftontrailrun.com/volunteers/volunteer-registration/ – we would like to have just about everybody on the list by this coming Monday 6/23 https://www.aftontrailrun.com/volunteers/volunteer-list/

Once again this year we will have Todd R. and Don C. heading up the marking and sweeping. Wendy N. and Jan O. heading up AS1/2 – at AS3/4 we are going to have a new crew comprised mostly of folks from the Break The Stigma Project headed up by Julio S. (Kurt, Carrie and Caytlin will still be at the race but are needing to take a year off from that aid station :), at AS5 will be the one and only Jefferey S. heading things up yet again with Tom, Nancy and other regulars and at AS6 / the 25KM split we hope to have another great crew from Run N Fun! If you have worked registration or the finish line in the past that is where you will likely be and anyone new we will spread you out a bit to learn the ropes!

As always, taking some time to educate yourself about the race via the website is a great idea, that way you can be the best resource possible for the runners and your fellow volunteers. https://www.aftontrailrun.com/

Once volunteer assignments are looking pretty solid we will send you one final email prior to the race. Volunteer assignments will be found HERE https://www.aftontrailrun.com/volunteer-assignment/ – please keep in mind that the list will be somewhat dynamic so be sure to check back a few days prior to the race.

Thank you all again, we just simply could not host this first class event without you! In the meantime please drop a line if you have any questions!

Thank You,

John Storkamp

More About the Race / Area:
The Afton Trail Run is one of the most challenging and beautiful trail races around.  The race was established in 1994 and is now one of the oldest, largest and most competitive trail races in the country and routinely draws runners from all 50 states and beyond.  The race takes place entirely within the borders of Afton State Park.  Afton State Park lies on a glacial moraine, scribed with deep ravines running down to the St. Croix River.  The 169 mile St. Croix River was one of the original eight United States rivers to have significant portions placed under protection by the National Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 1968.  Within the park sandstone outcrops have been exposed in some of the ravines. The vertical drop from the blufftop to the water is 300 feet.  A few patches of remnant prairie survived the decades of farming that took place on the blufftop. Today the former fields are being restored to prairie and oak savanna. The ravines leading down to the riverbank are thickly wooded with oak, aspen, birch, and cherry.
