Afton Trail Run, Date, Location, Packet Pickup and Race Start
Saturday July 5th, 2014 – Afton State Park, MN – 6959 Peller Ave S, Hastings, MN 55033
50KM Race Start 6:30AM (Packet Pickup from 5:00AM to 6:00AM – know your bib #)
25KM Race Start 7:30AM (Packet Pickup from 6:00AM to 7:00 AM – know your bib#)

If you do not have an annual state park, parking permit you may park without registering / paying in the morning and register or better yet buy an annual pass on your way out – cars that are not registered we will pay for but this just takes away from our donation to the parks special fund for trails and special programs – to date we have raised nearly $40,000!  Should you find that all the parking spots are taken please only park on one side of the road / where you are directed to park by our wonderful volunteer parking attendants.

Race Number Assignments & Chip Timing
Race / bib numbers have been assigned, please know your number at packet pickup on Saturday morning – you can find the list of assignments HERE http://www.aftontrailrun.com/2014-number-assignments/  Your timing chip will be affixed to your race number / bib – you must wear your bib on the front of your body and must not fold or crumple your number – this will break your timing chip and your time will not read when you cross the finish line.  If your emergency information is not already custom printed on your bib, please write your emergency contact information on the back of your race number.

Safety and DNF Procedure
It is usually HOT for this race, you should be carrying a water bottle or hydration pack and be taking in sufficient electrolyte replacement.  If for some reason you cannot finish the race you must remove your bib number and turn it in to a HAM Radio Operator – ask for them at any aid station or at the finish line – failure to do so will be grounds for a ban from future editions of the race.  We will have medical support on site but if you run within your training and take care of yourself, you won’t need it!

Trail Markings
As a reminder, we do not block off trails  that you are not supposed to go down, this is a public area and we cannot close down trails – instead, we mark the route you are supposed to take with fluorescent orange survey type flags and arrows which will always be on your left hand side (except in one short stretch of two-way traffic where they will be on both sides – there will also be course marshalls in this area) – trail running is “heads up running” pay attention and you will navigate the course without issue.  For your reference a course map can be found HERE

Awards and 25KM USATF Minnesota Association Chapionship Race

If you think you won your age group please do not leave without your award!  Due to the long gap between the first and last age group winners coming in we do not do an official awards ceremony but try to find all award winners shortly after crossing the finish line, if we don’t find you right away and you see you were 1st in your age group / division please do not be bashful and let us know before you take off.  As a reminder the Afton Trail Run 25KM is this years USATF-Minnesota Trail Championship race, more information can be found HERE

More About the Race / Area:
The Afton Trail Run is one of the most challenging and beautiful trail races around.  The race was established in 1994 and is now one of the oldest, largest and most competitive trail races in the country and routinely draws runners from all 50 states and beyond.  The race takes place entirely within the borders of Afton State Park.  Afton State Park lies on a glacial moraine, scribed with deep ravines running down to the St. Croix River.  The 169 mile St. Croix River was one of the original eight United States rivers to have significant portions placed under protection by the National Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 1968.  Within the park sandstone outcrops have been exposed in some of the ravines. The vertical drop from the blufftop to the water is 300 feet.  A few patches of remnant prairie survived the decades of farming that took place on the blufftop. Today the former fields are being restored to prairie and oak savanna. The ravines leading down to the riverbank are thickly wooded with oak, aspen, birch, and cherry.
